2K Games announced their new game studio Hanger 13 in late 2014, headed by Haden Blackman. Blackman, former project lead of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, worked at LucasArts for 13 years, and had a hand in the development of many Star Wars related games and comics. Hanger 13’s debut video game, Mafia 3, releases this coming Friday, and I am stoked.
Mafia 3 takes place in Hanger 13’s version of 1968 New Orleans: New Bordeaux. The game stars Lincoln Clay, an African-American Vietnam War veteran with ties to the Black Mob. I am extremely interested in not only the setting and time period, but also the character. Not only are all of these details ripe with potential story, they’re different than what we’re used to experiencing. One thing I look forward to in particular is how the game handles race.
Hanger 13 has no intentions to make this game a political ground for the topic of race, but they don’t shy from the racial issues that a man of color faced during this time period. Going into certain parts of the city will cause the police to act more aggressive towards you even if you haven’t done anything wrong; things like this. I’m interested to see how this plays into the game itself, and I’m excited to play as such a unique character from such an interesting background.
And if all of that doesn’t do it for you, watch the trailer. It looks not only gorgeous, but extremely fun.
I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of this open-world mobster game Friday, October 7th on PS4, XB1, and PC.
